Area guides

Where to live in Phuket: a guide to the areas

On Phuket the area decides more than the apartment. Choose it by your daily route, not by the beach.

The best area to live in Phuket depends on your daily route. The west coast – Bang Tao, Surin, Kamala, Kata – is beaches and resorts. The south – Rawai, Nai Harn, Chalong – is year-round life rather than a holiday. The north near the airport – Nai Yang, Mai Khao – is quieter and further from town. Phuket Town is the city and its services. Almost everywhere you will need a car or a scooter.

Phuket is searched by beach names. That is normal. But the beach is two hours of your day; the other twenty-two are school, shops, the doctor and the road between them. Holiday guides answer "where to stay". This guide answers "where to live".

How to read the island

Think of Phuket in a few zones: the beach coast in the west, the south where many long-stay residents live, the town in the middle-east, the airport north. Then add your own map: the school, the gym, the supermarket, the clinic.

Getting around. Official buses run from the airport to Phuket Town, to Patong, and the Smart Bus runs along the west coast through Cherngtalay, Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata, Sai Yuan and Rawai. Useful for trips; for daily life almost everyone still needs a car or a scooter.

Schools. Large international schools are not by the beaches: BISP is in Koh Kaew, UWC in Thalang, HeadStart in Cherngtalay. These are examples, not a ranking. Drive to your school in the morning from the address you are considering.

Seasons. In the monsoon months, swimming on the west coast can be dangerous; official Phuket sources warn about it. Watch the flags.

Bang Tao and Laguna

The west, a long resort beach. "Bang Tao" in an advert can mean three places: Laguna with its own hotels and services, the streets around Boat Avenue and Porto de Phuket, or inland Cherngtalay towards the hills. Your daily circle – school, shop, clinic – matters more than the distance to the beach.

Surin

A small, scenic beach between Kamala and Bang Tao. Calmer than the big resorts but not empty. "Near Surin", "sea view" and "walk to the beach" are three different things: walk the route.

Kamala

On the west coast between Patong and Surin. A calmer alternative to Patong, though not quiet everywhere. Near the beach you can walk; on the slopes you drive. Large schools and hospitals are elsewhere on the island.

Kata and Karon

The south-west: swimming beaches and tourist life. Good for holidays and for some long stays; check the school run if you have children.

Rawai and Nai Harn

The south, and several places under one name: the Rawai seafront, Nai Harn, Sai Yuan Road. You do not swim off the Rawai seafront every day – people drive to Nai Harn and Ya Nui. A base for year-round life rather than a holiday.

Chalong

The south, but not a beach area: roads, schools, the pier and a hospital. Practical rather than scenic.

The north near the airport

Nai Yang, Mai Khao and Sirinat National Park. Quieter, close to the airport, far from town. Aircraft can be heard near the runway.

Phuket Town

The city and its services, for those for whom the sea is not the main thing.
